3D joint rotation measurement using MEMs inertial sensors: Application to the knee joint

چکیده
This study investigated a functional calibration method to define the Cartesian bone-embedded anatomical frame necessary to calculate 3D joint angles. This method was combined with an inertial ambulatory system and applied to the measurement of 3D knee joint angles during gait. This combination was compared to a magnetic tracker system associated with a functional and postural calibration method. The measurement errors due to the shank’s soft tissues were also evaluated by the use of a harness. The combinations of the inertial acquisition system with the functional calibration method show good results. The errors obtained with different attachment methods did not show significant differences. The proposed combination constitutes a very promising tool for clinical evaluations. Inertial Thigh Angle Sensing for a Semi-active Knee Prosthesis
We present an application of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based inertial measurement unit (IMU) to thigh angle estimation for the control of a semi-active knee prosthesis. By using inertial based measurement devices, we can move all of our sensors to one location inside the prosthetic leg. These sensors are challenging to use, however, because error in their measurements will accumul...
متن کاملMethod for Estimating Three-Dimensional Knee Rotations Using Two Inertial Measurement Units: Validation with a Coordinate Measurement Machine
Three-dimensional rotations across the human knee serve as important markers of knee health and performance in multiple contexts including human mobility, worker safety and health, athletic performance, and warfighter performance. While knee rotations can be estimated using optical motion capture, that method is largely limited to the laboratory and small capture volumes. These limitations may ...
متن کامل3d Evaluation of the Knee Joint Functioning Using an Ambulatory System: Application to Acl-deficient Knees
INTRODUCTION Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries may lead to knee joint instability, which in turn may cause meniscal tears and cartilage lesions. Although several studies have shown that injuries of the ACL affect performances of daily activities, the three dimensional (3D) gait patterns after ACL injury and/or surgery are not yet clearly understood. The purpose of this study was twofold...

Joint moment estimation by a camera-based motion measurement system and a force plate has a limitation of measurement environment and is costly. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate quantitatively inertial sensor-based joint moment estimation methods with five-link, four-link and three-link rigid body models using different trunk segmented models. Joint moments, ground reaction forces (GRF)...
متن کاملMEMS IMU Error Mitigation Using Rotation Modulation Technique
Micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) inertial measurement unit (IMU) outputs are corrupted by significant sensor errors. The navigation errors of a MEMS-based inertial navigation system will therefore accumulate very quickly over time. This requires aiding from other sensors such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). However, it will still remain a significant challenge in the prese...
